Blend on the Water is LIC's Stand-Out Spot for Mojitos (+ Mac 'n Cheese)
Long Island City is known for many things: incredible view of Manhattan across the East River, Gantry Plaza State Park, ferry access, a dog park—and most recently, for kicking out Amazon HQ2 earlier this year.
One thing that should definitely be added to the list of notable LIC highlights is the bangin’ mojitos (and food) at Blend on the Water.
Located along the East River waterfront in Long Island City, Blend on the Water is one of three “Blend” locations in Queens—though this one is arguably the most beautiful of the bunch. Upscale without being stuffy, spacious yet intimate, the buzzy vibe at Blend is created by its hybridization between lounge bar and restaurant.
The unique setup makes Blend the perfect place for a special occasion—bachelorette parties, wedding anniversaries, dinners with out-of-town friends. It’s also a great place to impress a first date. You could easily stop in for drinks and appetizers before strolling along the waterfront and admiring the setting sun as it skims Manhattan’s skyscrapers.
Of course, the incredible views and classy yet lively atmosphere aren’t the only reasons you should make your way over to Blend on the Water. Not even close.
The main reason, in our humble opinion, is for the absolutely delicious, one-of-a-kind mojitos (and other cocktails) that Blend serves up.
We’re mainly talking about our new favorite mojito, one that could certainly give Amor Cubano’s champagne mojito a run for its money: the Fiery Dragonberry Mojito.
Made with Bacardi Dragonberry, Strawberry, and Bacardi 151, these mojitos literally came out ON FIRE, smoking and bubbling like a deliciously flaming cauldron of goodness. When we go out to eat, we usually make a practice of trying multiple drinks in order to sample a variety of flavors, but we actually ordered two rounds of Fiery Dragonberry Mojitos. They were THAT good.
And they went perfectly well with our delicious array of appetizers: Guacamole (served with thick and crunchy tortilla chips), Crispy Arepas, and Chorizo Mac and Cheese.
It almost seems sacrilegious to drink mojitos without munching on chips and guac, and Blend’s perfectly crisp tortillas and healthy serving of guacamole made it the perfect pair. We were also delightfully surprised by the Crispy Arepas, which were small, fried corn patties topped with braised short rib, avocado, lime-scented creme, cilantro, and cotija cheese. The short rib was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and these little arepa “poppers” were the perfect bite-sized mouthfuls of flavor to whet your appetite.
The star of the show (besides the Fiery Dragonberry Mojito, of course), was the Chorizo Mac and Cheese. Blend on the Water’s mac and cheese was delicious enough to win over even the toughest of mac-n-cheese critics. I’m not sure which part was my favorite—the wonderfully bespoke mix of cheeses (manchego, cotija, pepperjack), the flavorful ground chorizo, or the crumbly panko topping. It all worked together so well that I could have without a doubt finished the entire portion myself.
While enjoying our delicious food, we naturally had to make sure that the rest of the mojitos were as good as the Fiery Dragonberry Mojitos—and they did not disappoint. The Pineapple and Coconut flavors were tropical, fruity, smooth, and sweet—just the way a good mojito should be.
