Burgers, Bourbon and Beethoven—in a Cemetery? New York's Most Unique Summer Event
If you’re like me, you probably love a good burger, appreciate a fine bourbon, and Beethoven was definitely your favorite classical composer you learned about in high school. If you’re like Andrew Ousley, the creative force behind the Burgers, Bourbon and Beethoven Festival (lovingly called the “Three B’s), you’ll want to combine all of them in one spooky setting: Green-Wood Cemetery.
That’s right, you read that correctly: a cemetery.
This Saturday, May 25, you can now get your food and drink on with Green-Wood’s finest, all while listening to live (pun-intended) musicians play classical music on the cemetery lawn.
In an exclusive interview with Music & Mojitos, Ousley explained the impetus behind his one-of-a-kind event.
“The Three B’s is the culmination of my life, in many ways. I’m peaking young,” he laughs. “I work in classical music, and have been producing concerts in weird places.”
The Burgers, Bourbon, and Beethoven Festival is actually a fundraiser for The Angel’s Share, a popular classical music series run by Ousley and currently in its second season. The Angel’s Share—which takes its name from the whiskey that evaporates and goes “to the angels” during distillation—is held in the Green-Wood catacombs, and each concert is preceded by food, drinks, and a whiskey tasting. Rather than make ticket prices for The Angel’s Share prohibitively expensive in order to cover all the costs, Ousley decided to organize a fundraiser of sorts—enter the Burgers, Bourbon, and Beethoven Festival.
Given Ousley’s line of work, Beethoven seems fitting—but how do burgers and bourbon come into the mix?
”I created a Burger Club with a friend, where you try a burger, rate it on a scale, aggregate those ratings, and write a really highfalutin, verbose review,” he chuckles. “A developer friend of mine wanted to build a website around it, where you create events around burgers, rate them on the app, and then aggregate those ratings. And I just love whiskey,” he adds.
The Burgers, Bourbon, and Beethoven Festival is a culmination of all three of Andrew’s passions—and Music & Mojitos suspects that many others are going to be equally passionate about the festivities. How can you not be when there are going to be seven different whiskey sponsors, beers from Sixpoint Brewery, snacks, desserts, vegetarian options, hot dogs, and of course, burgers from Madcap Cafe and Harlem Burger?
Of course, you can’t forget that a love and appreciation for classical music is the true driving force behind the Three B’s. “The festival is sort of like stealth classical music” with the String Orchestra of Brooklyn culminating the experience in a performance of Beethoven. “If people come for the burgers and bourbon, and are not horrified by the classical music, I consider that a day well lived,” Ousley laughs.
The Three B's will be held on Saturday, May 25 from 7-10pm at Green-Wood Cemetery (500 25th St, Brooklyn, NY 11232). Please note that ticketholders must be 21+ to enter. To purhcase tickets to the Burgers, Bourbon, and Beethoven Festival, click HERE.
