Best Happy Hour Mojitos in the East Village
On the first Saturday night in February, Music & Mojitos celebrated the end of Whole30/Dry January the only way we knew how: by grabbing happy hour mojitos in one of our favorite neighborhoods in the city, the East Village. Given the celebratory nature of our date night, we knew that we needed to go big or go home - the self-imposed social isolation of avoiding carbs and cocktails naturally meant that we wanted to get the most bang for our buck. Enter Klong, a Thai restaurant on bustling St. Mark’s Place that offers unbeatable happy hour specials on their house-made mojitos and margaritas.
Kyle has been coming to Klong for quite some time - let’s just say that it was his “pre-Lauren” go-to date spot, and I have to admit, I was curious to see what all the fuss was about (and how a date at Klong compared to our first date picnic in Central Park). Of course the real draw to it all was the $3 mojito happy hour special that Kyle swore by - could a $3 cocktail in Manhattan really be as good as its $15+ counterparts?
The answer is, in a word, yes.
And it’s not just because you could theoretically have 5 mojitos for the price of one.
I was impressed by everything Klong had to offer from the moment we stepped in. It was unsurprisingly busy on a Saturday night at 7pm, but a table for two right by the front window had just opened up, so we were seated right away. Given the cozy size of the restaurant and the wallet-friendly mojitos, it’s no surprise that Klong gets packed, fast - even on weeknights, when the happy hour specials run until 10pm. Because it was a Saturday night, the happy hour mojito (and margarita) special ended at 8pm, so we had about an hour to try out some cocktails. And try we did.
Our original game plan was to stick with the classic mojito for $3 a pop, but when we saw the enticing list of flavored mojitos at only $5 each, neither of us could resist. I started with a strawberry mojito and Kyle began with a blueberry. Crisp and refreshing, these no-joke mojitos packed a surprising punch. I had half-expected a watered-down version given the price point, so was happy to have been proven wrong. They sort of tasted like jolly ranchers, with a twinge of mouth-puckering sourness smoothed out with refreshing mint. “This is how people get drunk - it tastes like pure candy,” Kyle said, and I had to agree. We quickly polished off our first round and ordered a second while we ate our appetizers.
This time, I opted for the mango mojito (Kyle stuck with blueberry) and we both agreed it was definitely the best drink of the night. It went along perfectly with our crispy Klong chicken wings with a spicy chili sauce.
They were SO good, my only complaint is that there weren’t more of them! Thankfully, Kyle is a true gentleman and gave me the last one. We also got Khoa Pod Tod, crispy Thai corn fritters with a sweet chili sauce and peanut crumbles.
Not at all what we had expected, these delicious little morsels of fried goodness totally grew on us the more we ate them and ended up being a fan favorite.
To round out our night, we ordered the last of our mojitos as our server came around for last call. Kyle loved my mango mojito so much that he ordered it as his third drink, while I opted to try the lychee mojito. It was also really delicious, but honestly anything following that mango mojito would have a hard time trying to outshine it.
I was pretty full by the time dinner came, but managed to tuck into some delicious chicken Pad Thai (I’m a sucker for simplicity) while Kyle devoured Klong’s Egg Noodle with Roasted Pork and Crispy Pork. Both were great, and both ensured ample leftovers for lunch the next day.
Music & Mojitos definitely recommends hitting up Klong if:
You need a good (and cheap) mojito or margarita in the East Village
You’re looking for a great (and cheap) happy hour spot
You want a place where you can go for just drinks but that has the potential to turn into a good meal if you’re feeling hungry
You need a “go-to cheap date spot” for all your Tinder babes
*PRO TIP: If you’re not keen on waiting for a table, take a date or grab a friend. Parties of two seemed to get seated a lot faster than the groups of people waiting by the bar for a table.
